A New Era for Frescoes: Arius Begins Historic Mobile Digitization of The Resurrection at Museo Civico Sansepolcro
Earlier this month, a technical milestone in art preservation was achieved in the heart of Sansepolcro, Italy. Arius, in partnership with the Municipality of Sansepolcro, has successfully deployed its latest mobile scanning innovation to capture the surface detail of Piero della Francesca’s iconic Renaissance masterpiece, The Resurrection.
This project marks a significant evolution in how the world documents wall-bound artworks. For centuries, the immovable nature of frescoes made high-fidelity digitization impossible. Today, Arius’ new mobile scanning platform has effectively eliminated these barriers by bringing the technology directly to the art.
A First-of-its-Kind Digital Leap
This implementation represents a first-of-its-kind project in Italy, setting a new precedent for the digitization of frescoes. By utilizing this advanced mobile system, the team is recording the fresco’s surface geometry and color down to 10-micron precision. Notably, this new mobile scanner is eight times faster than previous systems, allowing for unprecedented efficiency without compromising the integrity of the masterpiece.
"This is a new generation of data capture," says Marco Antonio Soriano, CEO of Arius Europa Italia SRL. "By digitizing The Resurrection in situ, we are ensuring that the world's most vulnerable treasures are protected, understood, and accessible for future generations, all while keeping these masterpieces exactly where they belong."
Creating an Immutable Legacy
The result is the creation of a comprehensive, high-fidelity digital twin. Using Arius’s proprietary ADMF™ (Art Digital Master File) process, the data provides an immutable record that serves as a foundational asset for future restoration research, condition monitoring, and high-fidelity textured reproductions.
During the scanning process, the Museo Civico Sansepolcro remained open to the public, allowing visitors to witness the convergence of 21st-century technology and Renaissance art in real-time. By inviting the community to see the scanner in action and interact with the technical team, the project emphasized a commitment to transparency and public engagement in the preservation process.
Precision, Innovation, and Speed: Meet the Arius Team in Monaco
At the core of Arius’ success lies a commitment to the same values that drive the pinnacle of motorsport: precision, innovation, and cutting-edge performance. Just as a Formula 1 team optimizes for speed and accuracy under pressure, Arius’ mobile scanner delivers unprecedented data-capture results, redefining the standards of global cultural stewardship.
The Arius executive team will be co-hosting Club Vivanova’s upcoming event at the Monaco Grand Prix on June 4, 2026. This gathering offers a unique opportunity to discuss the future of art data capture, our latest European projects, and how our commitment to technical excellence is redefining the standards of global cultural stewardship.
