The Confidence Recession: Why Relationships Matter More Than Ever
Something has changed in business.
Over the past twenty years, I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of entrepreneurs, business owners, executives and professionals from around the world. I have seen markets boom, financial crises reshape industries and technology completely transform the way we communicate and do business. But what I am seeing today feels different.
The restaurants are open. Airports are busy. Businesses are operating. People are travelling, investing and making plans. Yet beneath all of this activity, there is hesitation. Not necessarily a recession of money. A recession of confidence.
It is not an official economic term. But it describes remarkably well what I am seeing and hearing from business leaders and professionals across Europe, the UK, Asia and beyond. People are still doing business. They are simply thinking much harder before they do it. From βCan I?β to βShould I?β
A few years ago, many business decisions started with a relatively straightforward question: Can I afford to attend that event? Can I make that investment? Can I expand my business? Today, increasingly, the question has become: Should I? Should I attend? Should I invest? Should I commit? Should I wait?
That seemingly small change in language represents a significant change in mindset. Business owners are taking longer to make decisions. Companies are scrutinising discretionary spending. Professionals are becoming far more selective about where they invest their money β and, perhaps more importantly, their time. Events that might once have sold themselves now need to provide a genuine reason to attend.
Investments require greater conviction. New partnerships require greater trust. It is not necessarily because people cannot afford to act. It is because confidence has become a valuable commodity.
Relationships Have Never Been More Important
There is an interesting consequence to periods of uncertainty. Trusted relationships become more valuable. When confidence is high, opportunities seem plentiful and decisions are relatively easy. When confidence falls, people naturally look towards those they trust. A reliable introduction. A respected recommendation. A conversation with someone whose judgement they value.
Business has always been built on relationships, but I believe we are being reminded just how important those relationships really are. Technology can introduce us. Artificial intelligence can inform us. Social media can connect us to thousands of people around the world. But technology cannot manufacture trust. That still develops between people. Across a table. During a conversation. Over dinner or a shared glass of wine. Through an introduction from someone whose reputation matters. These seemingly simple human interactions continue to create opportunities that no algorithm can replicate.
The Return of Quality Over Quantity
Perhaps one of the most significant changes I have noticed is that successful people are no longer looking for more networking. They are looking for better networking. There is a difference. People do not necessarily want another room filled with hundreds of strangers exchanging business cards. They want curated introductions. Meaningful conversations. Interesting people. Authentic experiences. And environments where business relationships can develop naturally.
The days when the size of your contact list represented the strength of your network are disappearing. A network is only valuable when there are genuine relationships behind it. Today, many successful professionals are choosing fewer events, fewer meetings and fewer commitments β but expecting considerably more from each of them. Because in an increasingly busy world, time has become one of our greatest luxuries.
Human Connection in a Digital World
There is another paradox emerging. The more digitally connected we become, the more valuable genuine human connection appears to be. We can communicate instantly with almost anyone in the world. We can hold meetings across continents. We can build businesses remotely. We can use artificial intelligence to analyse information in seconds that once took days to understand. These developments are extraordinary.
But they also make genuine face-to-face interaction increasingly distinctive. There is still something powerful about meeting someone personally. Understanding their character. Hearing their story. Discovering a shared interest. Recognising an opportunity that neither person had anticipated before the conversation began. Some of the best business opportunities I have witnessed over the past two decades did not begin with a formal proposal. They began with a conversation.
Why Monaco Still Matters
This is one of the reasons Monaco continues to play such an important role within the Club Vivanova community. Monaco has always represented far more than luxury. It is one of the world's great international meeting places. During Formula 1, Monaco Yacht Show Week and the Principality's many international business, cultural and philanthropic occasions, entrepreneurs, investors, innovators and business leaders arrive from every corner of the globe. The opportunity has never simply been the location. It has always been the people.
And when the right people are brought together in the right environment, extraordinary things can happen. Introductions become friendships. Conversations become partnerships. Ideas become businesses. And sometimes an unexpected meeting changes the direction of an entire project.
The Ultimate Mixer Monaco 2026
This philosophy is at the heart of The Ultimate Mixer Monaco 2026 on 24th September. It was never intended to be simply another networking event. It is about creating the right environment for entrepreneurs, executives, professionals and international business leaders to meet naturally, exchange ideas and discover opportunities. No complicated formula. No forced networking. Just interesting people, quality hospitality and genuine conversation.
Because particularly during uncertain times, the value of being in the right room with the right people becomes considerably greater. Our belief remains very simple: Exceptional people create exceptional opportunities.
Looking Ahead
Despite the uncertainty that surrounds much of the world today, I remain optimistic. Business will continue to evolve. Technology will continue to transform our lives. Economic cycles will come and go. Confidence will fall and confidence will return. But one principle of business is unlikely ever to change. People do business with people they know, like and trust. That was true twenty years ago. It is true today. And in an increasingly digital and uncertain world, it may be more important than ever.
As we prepare to welcome our international community to The Ultimate Mixer Monaco 2026, our objective is therefore not simply to create another event. It is to create the conditions for relationships to begin. Because long after an event has finished, markets have changed and technology has moved forward, the right relationship can continue creating opportunities for years.
The right people. The right places. Real opportunities.
See you in Monaco.
