Monaco Grand Prix Enters A New Era With First-Ever F1 Sprint in 2027
The Monaco Grand Prix is set for another historic evolution in 2027, with Formula 1 confirming that the Principality will host an F1 Sprint for the first time.
The Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco 2027 will take place from 4 to 6 June, with the wider event programme beginning on Thursday 3 June. Monaco will be one of ten Sprint venues on the 24-race Formula 1 calendar — a significant expansion from the six Sprint weekends staged in 2026.
For Monaco, the change promises to transform the rhythm of an already extraordinary weekend.
More racing, less practice
The traditional Grand Prix format gives Formula 1 teams three practice sessions before qualifying. Under the Sprint format, that preparation time is dramatically reduced.
Friday will feature a single free practice session followed by Sprint Qualifying. The Sprint itself will take place on Saturday morning, before Grand Prix Qualifying later that afternoon determines the starting grid for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.
That means meaningful competitive action on all three days.
And nowhere could the reduction in preparation time be more intriguing than Monaco.
The narrow streets of Monte Carlo demand exceptional precision, while the circuit's barriers leave virtually no margin for error. With teams and drivers having significantly less time to perfect their cars before competitive running begins, the Sprint format introduces an additional element of uncertainty to one of Formula 1's most technically demanding weekends.
Two qualifying spectacles in Monte Carlo
Qualifying has long been one of the highlights of the Monaco Grand Prix.
With overtaking notoriously difficult around the Principality's tight street circuit, starting position carries unusual importance. A Sprint weekend will now effectively give spectators two qualifying spectacles: Sprint Qualifying on Friday and Grand Prix Qualifying on Saturday afternoon.
Formula 1 itself has highlighted this as one of the attractions of bringing the format to Monaco, with drivers twice required to push their cars to the limit around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo.
The Sprint will then add a second race to the weekend before Sunday's main event.
Formula 1 expands the Sprint concept
Monaco is part of a significant expansion of Sprint racing for 2027.
Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will all host their first Sprint weekends, while the format returns to Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar.
Formula 1 says the expansion is supported by growing audience demand. According to data released by F1, total viewership across Sprint weekends has been 12% higher than at non-Sprint events, while 82% of attendees at Sprint weekends say the format adds value to their ticket.
The introduction of the format in Monaco is particularly notable because the circuit presents a very different challenge from many previous Sprint venues.
Rather than relying purely on overtaking, the spectacle is likely to centre on qualifying, strategy, track position and the pressure created by sending Formula 1 cars into competitive running with considerably less preparation.
Another evolution for Monaco Grand Prix week
Beyond the sporting implications, the Sprint potentially adds another dimension to one of Monaco's most important international weeks.
The Monaco Grand Prix already brings together Formula 1, international business, luxury hospitality, private aviation, yachting and an extraordinary concentration of global visitors.
With competitive Formula 1 action now beginning on Friday rather than the weekend building predominantly towards Saturday qualifying and Sunday's Grand Prix, the new format could further strengthen the importance of the entire three-day period for hospitality, corporate entertaining and private events across the Principality.
It is another indication of Formula 1's continuing evolution from a race weekend into a broader international entertainment platform.
The 2027 championship will comprise 24 Grands Prix across 22 countries and five continents, with Portugal and Türkiye also returning to the Formula 1 calendar.
A historic first for Monaco
Few races carry the heritage of Monaco. The 2027 event will mark the 84th edition of the Monaco Grand Prix and, for the first time, spectators will see two Formula 1 races on the streets of the Principality during the same weekend.
For drivers, it means less preparation and greater pressure. For spectators, it means more competitive action. And for Monaco, it adds a new chapter to one of the world's most celebrated sporting events.
The Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Grand Prix de Monaco takes place from 4 to 6 June 2027, with the Sprint scheduled for Saturday 5 June and the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday 6 June.
