The wine tradition in the French branch of the Rothschild family was born in 1868 with the purchase of Château Lafite by James de Rothschild. After more than a century of family history linked to the world of wine, Baron Edmond de Rothschild (great-grandson of James) extended this family tradition in 1973 by acquiring two Listrac and Moulis Crus Bourgeois in Médoc: Château Clarke and Château Malmaison. He then created the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild. In 1999, Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild bought 250 ha in Argentina at the base of the Andes to produce “Flechas de los Andes” wines with Mr Laurent Dassault.

In the Bordeaux region, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild acquired the superb property at Château des Laurets in 2003 seeking to develop the full potential of this vineyard straddling two AOCs: Puisseguin Saint-Émilion and Montagne Saint-Émilion. After significant renovation work, the estate now boasts modern, high-performance facilities.

More recently, in New Zealand, the acquisition of 26 ha of grapevines at the heart of the Marlborough valley has yielded Rimapere, an outstanding Sauvignon Blanc.

Baron Benjamin de Rothschild and his wife Ariane continue to produce high-quality wines with exacting standards, when it comes to both the choice of new terroirs and each stage of vinification.

If you’ve been following our colleagues in our Hong Kong and United States sale rooms you know how much great wine there is on the market right now. We’ve had our annual partnership with La Paulée, our first-ever Spirits-only auctions, and set hundreds of world records along the way. We are in the middle of an unbelievably busy June, with our partnership with Premiere Napa Valley, and the sales of wines from such collecting luminaries as George Caloyannidis and Tawfiq Khoury. I’m delighted to continue along this path of success with this sale.

Not only do we have wine from Pioneers, an offering now being sold on its third con- tinent, we have an amazing consignment from right here on the continent. Starting on lot 34, this is the same consignment sold earlier in the year as the “DRC Only” sale in New York (there’s additional wine here, not just DRC). Following this consignment is the heart of this auction, at lot 50. This consignment is all about the Burgundy, with easily the largest offering of DRC we have ever sold at Zachys Europe! There’s also Dugat-Py, Faiveley, Trapet, Mugnier, and many more.

Later in the auction is a wonderful group of Mascarello, which graces the cover of this catalog, and it wouldn’t be a London sale without an amazing offering of Chartreuse starting at lot 324.

Zachys Wine Auctions - La Paulée Returns With La Paulée Mondiale 2021 from 10th to 21st March - Fine And Rare Wines Of The World

The auction event of the season has returned yet again to the delight of oenophiles and Burgundy connoisseurs everywhere! If you’re a seasoned La Paulée veteran, then that’s all you needed to hear; head over to the sale and start bidding. If this is your first La Paulée, then please allow us to introduce you to the premier auction and event of the year!

Historically, La Paulée is a traditional Burgundian celebration held at the end of the harvest season in November. This practice can trace its roots all the way back the middle ages where it was once a widespread practice throughout France. At that time, the Cistercian monks invited their vineyard laborers to dine and celebrate the end of the harvest with them. Nowadays, La Paulée most commonly refers to the modern festivities held in Meursault that were revived by Jules Lafon. In 1923, Lafon was one of Burgundy’s most respected wine growers and held this first modern version of the celebration at his Meursault domaine. Back then, the event consisted only of a small banquet in the vat-room with his guests.

Over time, the banquet became an officially established, annual cultural event as more and more neighboring viticulturists joined the festivities. As such, La Paulée has evolved from the original, modest communal banquet held in Lafon’s vat room; today, the official La Paulée de Meursault is attended by Meursault growers and producers alike along with several other wine connoisseurs and professionals, and the most sought after ticket of the famous and grand three-day Burgundy weekend, that culminates in the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction.

La Paulée as we know and love, and celebrate every year in March, has taken place in New York, San Francisco, and Aspen, Colorado and captures the spirit of the Burgundian tradition through a fantastic program of events revolving around the wonderful wines of the region.

This year, for obvious reasons, La Paulée has gone virtual! La Paulée Mondiale will take place from March 10th to 21st, and offers a rich itinerary of online events diligently produced by the award-winning sommelier Daniel Johnnes (who originally brought the celebration stateside back in 2000) and the La Paulée team. Highlights include: online seminars exploring specific Burgundy vineyards sites with both winemakers and geologists, winemaker interviews, exclusive content directly from the fine winemakers of Burgundy, and a self-guided Grand Tasting! Of particular note is the panel on March 10th presented by La Paulée & Zachys: “Wine Auctions: Tips on Bidding, Buying, Consigning, and Avoiding Pitfalls”; anybody new to the auction portion of La Paulée will want to check this one out!

In our vineyards in Urla, we have started from scratch, and are growing several red varietals after careful selection considering the geography and the history of the region. We grow our vines organically with little to no manipulation, and work in coordination with the laws of the nature. With global lockdowns adversely affecting the gastronomy trade, a new lock-down subscription business launched. Brad’s Wine offers discerning wine drinkers the chance to subscribe and have a great selection of boutique wines delivered each month with tasting notes, wine-pairing recipes, free gifts and the chance to wine great monthly prizes.

As a supporting role to this subscription service, Brad offers subscribers the chance to understand more about what they are drinking. Watch a selection of videos online that are presented to simplify the understanding of wines and explain more about wine history; with tasting explanations on a variety of wine growing locations and varietals and simple overviews of how to examine and evaluate wine.
