When Interpretation Creates Failure
In my work with high-performing leaders, I encounter the same dynamic repeatedly:
Reality deviates from the expected outcome.
And almost immediately, the deviation is interpreted as failure — as loss, as a wrong decision, or as evidence that the original direction was flawed.
But the deviation itself is not yet the failure.
It is the interpretation that changes the meaning of what has happened.
Once trust begins to erode, a different dynamic takes over: more control, premature course corrections, decisions driven by the need to restore certainty rather than by what the situation actually requires.
And this is where something paradoxical happens:
The original deviation may have been temporary. The reaction to it can turn it into a genuine failure.
High performance is not only the ability to act decisively. It is also the capacity to remain sufficiently grounded when reality does not immediately confirm the expected outcome.
Because sometimes the most consequential mistake is not what happened.
It is what we decide that what happened means.
